the question i've chosen to do for my textiles exam is simply titled "surfaces", which is really wonderfully open. the direction i've chosen is how artists and designers represent surfaces figuratively in their work, and make some really beautiful mixed-media pieces. i was looking at warhol's representations of celebrites in those pictures, and googling away when i found JOHN PAUL THURLOW. he re-imagines and re-draws his favourite magazine covers and immortalizes them again in pencil on paper. for a fashion junkie who is constantly studying covers to try replicate even just the writing, seeing someone do the whole thing so well is pretty humbling. so JPT, you have got yourself a double page spread in my scrapbook. and you know you've made it when AS students write about you in gold and silver pen and do rubbish knock offs of your work. love it!
