colour blocking for beginners

if you flick through the archives of this blog, you'll find it's deficient in many things. weather appropriate dressing, perhaps, or maybe sensible shoes. but one massive thing that my blog, and in turn, my wardrobe is lacking? colour. i'm such a colour-phobic! i have an awful lot of blue in my wardrobe, which has somehow become my "safe" colour, my base colour, my goes-with-anything colour. any blue in any shades from petrol to electric to navy. my wardrobe kind of resembles that of a marine. so you can imagine how i felt when i saw what was storming down the runways at fashion week. colour, and lots of it. having never worn colour, i literally did not know what suited me. but i was hooked, and i wanted to try. if you, like me, have never embraced colour, now is definitely the time to start. this season, there are so few rules; the more clashing the better. i'd recommend you set aside a good bit of shopping to just try out colours, and see what compliments your skin tone and what completely washes you out. once you've cracked that, the possibilities are endless! go for bold, bright tones, and if you're still apprehensive, pair it with a simpler tone, until you're bold enough to stack colour on colour.

point in case: bottom, a H&M tomato-red vest, played down with my peachy pink zara blazer and laser-cut, scalloped edge shorts from miss selfridge. almost business like, no? and top: paul costelloe bright pink shirt with lemon yellow topshop shorts. because why the hell not?

in other news, if you ever needed more reasons to check out noir magazine, next issue will have my completely hilarious interview with tom felton, who i met up with this week. expect ferret jokes, the oddness of the superfan and how robert pattinson is really coping with all the twi-hard attention. on monday, at 5pm GMT, voting ends for the westfield style competition i'm in. if you haven't voted, please do, all you have to do is press like or tweet, every vote counts! if i win, i'm going to do a giveaway. you can vote for me here.

Colour blocking kind of scares me, I tend to stick to neutrals. But I really do love the look, so I'm going to give it a try!

I'm kind of jealous you met Tom Felton, he seems like a really funny, nice, sweet, guy from the interviews I've senn!

I think you look lovely in each of those outfits. Those Miss Selfridge shorts are so sweet! I have quite a bit of colour in my wardrobe- I'm just not that good at wearing neutral outfits!

I EXACTLY know what you mean about blue. Like everyone I do have a fair bit of black but it's blue that I return to time after time to try and be less boring.

The colours look fantastic on you!

My wardrobe is made up of a lot of blue and black, so I'm with you on working color into my outfits. Love how you styled this look!

The bright colours really suit you! I particularly like the tomato red top and you've neutralised it, like you said.
Beautiful!

I'm a total colour phob as well. I'm really inspired and excited to try colour blocking as well. You're wearing the colours so well.
Those pink tones really suit you. I love both tops.

i so agree with david, you look lovely in the first picture! i adore your top. i wish i could wear such bright colours, but they do in fact scare me! plus i just don't feel confident in them and i don't want to draw more attention to myself. blacks, greys, greens and browns are definitely my colours. xx

I love your top in the first picture, it is such a gorgeous colour. I am trying to incorporate more colour into my outfits at the moment especially with winter approaching and the tendency for blacks and greys to prevail. This is what I tried in my most recent outfit post.
