we may have made a fond farewell to london, and let the fashion ship sail over to milan, but i'm still obsessing over my favourite collections from the week. this is maybe my sixth season at LFW, and things can very quickly start to get all too familiar. i can find myself slouching in my seat at shows, tweeting rather than talking, and generally just wondering when my next meal will be. then something so brilliant, a talent so great, a collection so breathtaking will suddenly be thrown in front of me and it's the biggest (and best) slap in the face. i suddenly remember why i chose this industry over anything else, why i'm so geeky about fashion and why i hoard copies of vogue like there's about to be a style apocalypse. this season, it was michael van der ham. i feel can't really rave about him enough (see this and this and also this), because his stuff is just that good. i happened to have my camera with me, and i'm so glad i did, because i was able to capture some of the incredible dresses. the topshop venue was packed, proving that van der ham has graduated from being the whispered word on fashion insider's lips to a full-blown sensation. taking inspiration from 1930's home knits and abstract and marbled prints, van der ham showed an eclectic mix of organza draped dresses, boucle jumpers and jacquard separates. the archetypal van der ham look of pieced-together, jigsaw-like pieces seeped through the collection, with mixed swatches of fabric and colour. a cool palette light blues and metallic silvers, with a good splash of sparkle and sequins rubbed shoulders with day dresses of coral and rust. the collection is just so eminently wearable, without sacrificing ny runway sensibilities; van der ham skilfully translates his creative vision into gorgeous day to night pieces, with just the right measures of weird and wonderful. intricate details like crushed organza and pleating made for another stellar collection.
the lovely people over at christian louboutin were kind enough to collaborate with van der ham to create the amazing shoes that you can see accompanying the runway looks. all in all, i think it's one of the most consistently covetable collections i've seen in a long time. hats off!
